Help us keep the lake in Lake Accotink Park
Lake Accotink is in danger and the future is uncertain!
The lake is filling in with sediment caused by storm water runoff into Accotink Creek.
We must convince the County to keep the LAKE in Lake Accotink Park.
Do you know that the lake could disappear?
Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services has contracted with an environmental engineering firm to conduct a feasibility study. The study is considering options for a smaller lake. The study is not planned to be completed until late 2026.
What is Fairfax County doing to save the lake?
This video shows an areal view of how the lake has shrunk over time.
See how the lake has filled in over time.
Lake Accotink was originally over one hundred and ten acres in surface area. Over time the surface area of the lake has been reduced by soil that has been washed into the lake via Accotink Creek from the surrounding watershed. The problem of the eroding soil in the stream banks is due to the high volume of water that runs off of hard surfaces like buildings, roads and parking lots and into storms drains and then ultimately into the Accotink Creek.
