Background

The lake is filling with sediment from upstream and a solution is needed.

Lake Accotink is an invaluable resource to Fairfax County.  It provides unparalleled recreational opportunities in the heart of a densely industrialized and residential area and provides and a rich habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including bald eagles and herons.  The lake and the park serve a diverse socio-economic and multi-ethnic population.

In addition to providing recreational and leisure options, the lake serves an important environmental function. It buffers ever increasing storm flows and captures sediment that is generated upstream as a result of decades of unsustainable building practices. Without the presence of the lake, these flows and sediment would continue downstream and continue to scour riverbanks and deposit sediment into downstream communities, the Potomac River, and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.
